Gravity conveyor types

There are a number of different gravity conveyor products available through MCL that are each suited for a specific role in your material handling system. Explore our comprehensive range of gravity conveyor options and their applications here:

(13) Gravity Chute
Gravity Chute

Designed for controlled descent from one level to another, gravity chutes utilise a smooth decline or channel to allow materials to slide under their own weight.

(9) Gravity Spiral Chute.379
Gravity Spiral Chute

Designed for efficient item transportation between different levels of a conveyor system. The spiral design is ideal both for controlled descent and accumulation, and offers a reduced footprint.

(11) Gravity Roller Conveyor
Gravity Roller Conveyor

Simple yet effective, this conveyor can be flat or slightly declined to help move materials. Constructed of parallel rollers within a frame, gravity roller conveyors are a great way to move heavier objects easily.

(10) Gravity Spiral Roller Conveyor
Gravity Spiral Roller Conveyor

This conveyor facilitates smooth downward movement and is typically used to connect one level of gravity rollers with another. The design allows you to create more efficient layouts and save floor space.

HELICAL GRAVITY 180
Gravity Skate Wheel Conveyor

Lightweight and cost-effective, these are ideal for handling lightweight and more irregularly-shaped items. Featuring rows of skate wheels within a frame, they offer low-friction support for efficient item movement, and can be used as flexible gravity conveyors.

Gravity conveyor system manufacturing options

Many of our conveyor types have similar options for manufacturing materials, so you can ensure each different type of conveyor you require is best suited for your storage or distribution facility.

  • Powder Coated Mild Steel

Reliable and cost-effective, our powder coated mild steel gravity conveyors offer durability and versatility for various industrial applications.

  • Stainless Steel (304 and 316)

Engineered for corrosion resistance, our stainless steel conveyors ensure optimal performance in washdown and pharmaceutical environments, and some food processing environments.

  • Aluminium

Our aluminium gravity conveyors are designed for lightweight applications, offering ease of handling and installation without compromising on strength.

  • Galvanised Steel

Robust and weather-resistant, our galvanised steel conveyors are ideal for outdoor and industrial settings, providing durability and longevity.

Gravity conveyor modular options

Customise your gravity conveyor system even further with our modular options. Gravity conveyors are easy to adapt for any space required, thanks to the optional modifications we have on offer:

Industries that use the gravity conveyor

We recommend gravity conveyors for warehouse applications where separation and sortation is not required, where a cost-effective solution is desired.

Gravity conveyors have historically been commonly found in warehouse and distribution spaces. However, there has been a major shift in recent times to powered or automated conveyors, integrated with AS/RS and AGV solutions - especially in 3PL applications.

Warehousing & Distribution Streamline inventory management and order fulfilment processes with conveyor systems, enhancing efficiency in warehousing and distribution operations.
Manufacturing Facilitate the movement of components or finished products, while integrating seamlessly with existing automated manufacturing processes.
Post Grading Ensure precise sorting and grading of food products, maintaining quality and consistency in post-harvest handling and processing.
e-Commerce Expedite order fulfilment and sorting of products, enabling faster and more accurate delivery of goods upon purchase.
3PL Optimise logistics and distribution, enabling efficient handling and movement of goods for third-party logistics.
Packaging Enhance efficiency of product handling and packaging, ensuring smooth and reliable operations for a wide range of packaging sectors.

Frequently Asked Questions

WHAT IS A GRAVITY CONVEYOR?

A gravity conveyor is a mechanical system that moves materials along a predetermined path, typically without the need for external power sources, making it the lowest cost option for product movement. As such the initial investment is low, while still delivering the advantage of increased product movement.

Unlike powered conveyors which require external energy to move items, gravity conveyors typically use declines or spirals to build the momentum needed to move goods or materials, but operators are still required to ensure product is transported from one place to the other.

HOW IS GRAVITY USE IN MATERIAL HANDLING?

Gravity provides a natural force that aids in the movement of objects without the need for external power.

In gravity-based conveyor systems, objects are placed on a sloping surface, allowing them to move down the slope due to the force of gravity. This simple yet effective principle is used across many conveyor types such as roller conveyors, chute conveyors, spiral conveyors and more.

It's also possible to use gravity powered conveyors for one section of a larger system, to avoid requiring external power for the entire facility.

WHAT IS THE MINIMUM SLOPE FOR A GRAVITY CONVEYOR?

The minimum slope required for a gravity conveyor depends on a few different factors, including the weight and size of the conveyed objects, the frictional characteristics of the conveyor surface, and the desired speed of material flow. While there is no universally applicable minimum slope, we would generally recommend a slope ranging from 1 to 3 degrees for most gravity conveyor applications.

This slope range ensures that objects move along the conveyor without excessive acceleration. However, this will certainly differ based on the unique needs of each application. For example, some materials may not accelerate enough on such a small slope, especially if the conveyor surface has relatively high friction. In any case we can help you find the ideal settings for your facility.
